Cartier

The brand: French luxury jewelry house, founded 1847. Worn by royalty, coveted by everyone else. This is a company that knows how to make you feel like you're buying more than a product. You're buying a legacy.

The signup: I signed up on Jan 6th in the footer form on cartier.com. They ask for title (Mr./Mrs./Ms.), first name, last name, and email. Formal. On-brand. The confirmation modal is underwhelming. No personalization or segmentation questions. Just "You have successfully subscribed to our newsletter." No next step, no excitement, no setting expectations on volume or frequency, no hint of what's coming.

The promise: "Receive exclusive information from Cartier."

The Vitals

  • Sender: [email protected] (welcome + promos)

  • Inbox placement: Primary (all 3 emails)

  • Emails in first 15 days: 3

  • Mobile-friendly: Yes, Fixed-width layout that doesn't expand on desktop. The emails feel like they were designed for mobile and just... stayed that way.

Walkthrough

Day 5 - "Welcome to Cartier" Five days to welcome me? No personalization even though they asked for my name. The email has beautiful product imagery, lifestyle photography, the Cartier universe laid out in sections. But the emotional window has closed. The moment I signed up, I was curious. By day 5, some may have moved on. Give me a compelling story. A hook. Rekindle my curiosity.

Day 10 Brand Story with product focus "How far would you go for love?" is a great subject line. The emails are polished. The LOVE bracelet story (Aldo Cipullo, 1969, the screwdriver detail, "sealed by its matching screwdriver") is exactly the kind of heritage content that makes Cartier Cartier. But there's no arc. No sense that Cartier is taking me on a journey. It's beautiful content, broadcast style. I'm on a list, not in a relationship.

Day 15 "Golden Moments" is pretty but really generic. The copy name drops collections (Love, Juste un Clou, Clash, Trinity, Panthère) without telling me why I should care about any of them. It's a menu, not a story.

Halfway down, there's a personalization section "Whether a memorable date, initials or a special symbol, make your mark." That's actually compelling. Customization creates emotional investment. But it's treated like an afterthought in the product grid.

The Progression Verdict

Cartier's emails are gorgeous. Their sequence is ok.

Here's what they got right:

  • Primary inbox every time

  • On-brand visuals

  • Subject lines that make you want to click

  • Balance for story and promotion

Here's what they missed:

  • Waited 5 days to welcome me

  • Fixed width emails - stuck in mobile mode?

  • No using my name even though they asked for it

  • Not asking for preferences or the ability to update them.

Cartier knows how to make you feel special when you walk into a boutique. Their email sequence feels like the boutique's back office.

Things I’d Change

Send the welcome instantly, not days later. The welcome email is the invitation to a relationship. You asked for my name, use it.

Cartier could have lived up the in person experience but didn’t.
